Hi, we're back for Seconds!
Because this is still a pretty new enterprise, there may still be
people who didn't see the formalities last week. So I'm just
going to repeat myself now: This broadcast is not
affiliated with or sanctioned by ASPMA, and is not
sponsored by anyone at all. If you do not wish to
receive further broadcasts from me, please just reply to the above
address and let me know.
The new web site has grown since last week. It now includes a
Picture page and Practice Management Gems in addition to the Home, FootZine,
Links, Calendar, Feeture Article, and Networking. You may want
to save this web address: http://home.attbi.com/~gaylepmac/Gayle-webpage_1.htm You'll be able to find last week's Feeture Article, which was the
third in a series of articles about HIPAA from Raymond Posa, MBA,
and the FootZine Archives will show you last week's entire
issue. Check back now and then - I expect it
to keep growing!

This week we have Letters
>>>>>>>>>>>
From: Linda Harr re: Restrictions
I am interested in obtaining written notices of what restrictions
are placed on Michigan podiatric assistants.
I am especially interested in the following questions: 1. Can a podiatric assistant give injections (ie: block for nail
procedure)? 2. Can a podiatric assistant apply unnaboots &/or fiberglas
casts?
I am the secretary for the Michigan Podiatric Medical Assistants
Association, and have been asked these questions several times. I
would like to receive something in writing that I could suggest my
members could reference.
Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

From: Lori D'Angelantonio re: HIPAA Dear Gayle,
Please help. Do you know of any seminars in the New Jersey and Philadelphia area for HIPAA compliance? I am very concerned about
getting our office in order before the deadline, but not quite sure of what is
required. If possible can you call me at 856-589-9328? Also, do you know of any vendors that may be able to assist?
Thank you, Lori D'Angelantonio Strgwill2@aol.com

*_* Dear Lori,
Thanks for writing today.
I have not heard of anything specific program in the Philadelphia or
NJ area about HIPAA. I would suggest that you go to the HIPAA
Extension site (link from my "Links" page below) and file
for your extension right away. Be sure to do it electronically, so
that you will have the electronic "receipt" to prove that
you did that step on time. Then you will have time to work out the
rest. http://www.cms.gov/hipaa/hipaa2/ascaform.asp
Another option, which I have not explored yet, was
offered by Dr. Barry Block in his September 20, 2002, issue of pm-news.
Dr. Block reported that HHS has another form to use, and the Report
on Patient Privacy that he quoted made it sound almost preferable to
the other one. You can look at that one by pasting the following
link into your browser: Aspe.os.dhhs.gov/admnsimp/index.htm
Like you, I am still trying to explore options and find resources to
share with my doctor and office manager. I don't know for sure about
software vendors, but I understand that they are also scrambling to
comply. I believe Mr. Ray Posa, who has contributed HIPAA articles
to FootZine and the ASPMA NewsFlash, may be able to
offer some suggestions, and I am sharing your questions with him.
Because they are involved in meeting planning in your area, I am
also sharing your inquiry with Dr. Hal Ornstein and with Marlene
Kern and Lynn Homisak.
You might also write to Susan Kramer, Communications Director at the
PPMA, to ask whether the Goldfarb Foundation program in November
will include any HIPAA information. Her email address is susan@ppma.org
I hope this is of some help to you. Please let me know if I can help
you further. I will share any HIPAA information with all of you as I
receive it.
Thanks again for writing,
~ Gayle

From: Raymond F. Posa, MBA re: HIPAA
Dear Lori,
My name is Raymond Posa, I am the technology Advisor to the AAPPM.
Gayle sent me a copy of your E-mail.
There is an upcoming HIPAA compliance seminar October 13, 2002, at
the Crowne Plaza Hotel, LaGuardia Airport, NY. It is
being put on by the NYSPMA & Podiatry Management.
The lecturers will be Alan Lambert, MD, JD and Barry Block, DPM, JD.
The APMA Member price is $25 and Non-APMA Members price is $125 .
You can call 212-996-4400 for more info or e-mail nypod@aol.com
If you can't make the meeting then you may want to check out www.NJHIPAA.com
(It is still undergoing some construction but it is a great starting
spot). New Jersey HIPAA is a consulting group that
started out doing HIPAA surveys for large hospitals and is now
focusing on private practices. They have a HIPAA
software tool that helps your practice get and stay compliant. They
also do on-site surveys and audits.
Thank you Raymond Posa

From: Carol L. Westfall, LtCol, USAF, NC re: Managing Nail Dust
Gayle,
I am an Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist working with
diabetics. I am in the process of setting up a preventive foot care clinic (education
and basic nail/foot care) with Podiatry, Vascular Surgery, and Orthopedic
referral ability. My question is this: I am interested in any OSHA/JCAHO requirements/guidance when using a dremel--such things as fan, hepa filtering device etc.
Thank you,
