The annual APMA Scientific Meeting was held this week in Boston, in combination with the World Congress of Podiatry, setting record attendance once again.

Congratulations to Dr. Harry Goldsmith, founder and Editor of Codingline-L, on receiving the Podiatry Management Lifetime Achievement Award and being inducted into the PM Podiatric Hall of Fame.   Dr. Goldsmith was also recognized with a special award from the American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management.

Congratulations also go to Dr. Hal Ornstein, President of the American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management and frequent contributor to FootZine, on receiving the Kenison Award from the APMSA (American Podiatric Medical Students Association).

Both of these doctors share their time and expertise generously so that our work will be made easier.  Many thanks to them both!

It is so funny because I myself have been in search for feet scrubs for soooo long and no one has any!  There are tons of dental, baby, basic nursing....but no feet!!  AHHHHH!!!  Makes me mad.  I am willing to pay someone to custom make me a scrub top if anyone can do that???

Thanks Gayle and have a great day!

re:      In-Office Medicare Training  (Volume 84)

Hi Gayle,

To answer your question regarding in-office training.  We try to have the office staff come to our office for training.  We do offer teleconferencing and online training.  Most of our training is done online.  We can set up an instant meeting.  At last resort we will come to the physician's office if it's not far away.  We will do in person group training, if a provider sets up a training session with at least 20 people.

Our online training is listed on our website.  We are not offering Podiatry at this time.

Thank You,

I had asked Linda:  "Do you know if all the other Medicare carriers provide a similar range of options?  Does CMS determine what will be offered and in what format?"   ~Gayle

re:      Medicare Training (follow-up)

I can't speak for all the Carriers, but I would assume their training is similar.  CMS does require us to offer training for the new physician.  Most of our topics are chosen based on errors, repeated phone calls and medical review.

re:      Help with Billing (Volume 85);  Question for AAPPM

Dear Gayle,

As a follow up to my previous post, while I do own a billing service and have been doing billing for podiatry for over 20 years I would not be opposed to helping someone who had billing questions and coding questions.  Flash code by PMIC is another resourceful tool for coding, CCI, diagnosis etc. and is ready and downloadable now, after purchase you get quarterly updates with pricing for all 50 states including DME.  I also have experience with Indiana, and Florida billing, but other states are easy to access information.  I am a member of HBMA (HealthCare Billing and Management Association).  I can access other members if I don't know an answer to a question.  Also I would not charge for helping out at any time with questions.  I have a toll free number listed below; physicians and staff are encouraged to use it.

I do have a question for any doctor that is affiliated with AAPPM group.  I interviewed with a podiatrist who had contacted me about billing for him here in MI.  When I went to talk to him he stated he had been to a AAPPM meeting and they told him it was imperative he DO HIS OWN BILLING for six months before signing with a billing service.  I was just curious if anyone had any knowledge of the AAPPM endorsing this.  The first 6-12 months of a practice are the most crucial and having the knowledge and expertise of a billing service could prove to be very beneficial to a start up practice.  It's of course not the only way but can be a wise choice for some to get through the maze of insurance and computer billing since finances are tough.

Just curious and I look forward to helping when I can.

Re:     Job Descriptions for Podiatric Medical Offices

The Michigan Podiatric Medical Association, in coordination with the Michigan Dental Association is in the process of finalizing a Human Resource Manual.  They are in need of a job description for a podiatric medical assistant and any other unique podiatric specific terms that would apply to a billing clerk, receptionist, and office manager positions.  The manual, which will be entitled “Staff Matters,” is selling very well within the dental community and will cover Fair Employment Practices, OSHA, Compensation, Benefits, Associates, Professional and Miscellaneous Regulations, Employment/Personnel Forms,  Procedures for Hiring/Firing, Employee Orientation Checklist, Employee File Checklist, Exit Interview Questions, Resignation/Termination Checklist, Reference Guide to Employment Law and Employment Agencies, Federal and State Websites and a Sample Employee Handbook.  The Manual will also include a CD for each office that purchases the Manual.

It's hard to believe that the summer season is coming to a close soon.   We've already experienced a taste of the fall rain and gray skies, so the real thing can't be far behind.  The FootZine schedule should be returning to normal, too, before long, so don't forget to write!
