The spring seminar season is here again.  Next week the Midwest Podiatry Conference will take place in Chicago, and for the first time will include the ASPMA Annual Meeting.  At the same time, Washington State's WSPMA and WSPMAA will meet in Seattle.  These meetings are always a great source of learning, a place to see new products, a chance to greet old friends and make new ones, and a wonderful opportunity for networking.

This week the "Positions Wanted" section of the FootZine Networking page is included here.  Next time we will include the "Positions Available".   If you aren't in need of new staff yourself, maybe you know someone (who may know someone) who is?

If your state or regional association has an upcoming meeting with an assistants' program, please email me the details and I'll be happy to pass the information along.  Several upcoming seminars are posted on the FootZine Calendar page at this link: http://www.footzine.com/FZ_4.htm

re:      Position Wanted  (Networking, Volume 103)

Hi Susan,

I am the present vice president of NJPMAA which is the state association for podiatric assistants.  The best way is probably the phone book, or you might give Marlene Kern a call at 973-546-1616 she has held past offices in our association and may be able to help you in the Bergen County area.  I would also like to invite you to become a member of our association if you are not as yet.

Lastly there is a seminar coming up in Atlantic City week of 5/18-5/20 if you are interested let us know.  You may be able to hook up with other assistants in the area.

Good luck

Maggie

re:      Podiatric Assistant Education/Training

Dear Gayle,

I am currently an LPN working in a podiatry office in Minnesota.  I have been considering becoming a Certified Podiatry Assistant. I am having a lot of trouble finding information on this topic.

The question I have for you is:  What Are the education / training requirements for the state of Minnesota?  Or, do you have any suggestions for web sites that I can use to find this information?

Thank you very much,

Carla

re:      Transcription Service

Hi Gayle,

Looking for a good reliable accurate transcription service. Is that an oxymoron or something?
I look forward to finding one. Thanks to you and anyone out there that can suggest one.

Jenny

Esther Espinoza is a podiatric medical assistant who lives in Silverdale and is looking for a full-time permanent position.  She has worked with me for over one year in my former practice in San Antonio, TX, and has moved here to Washington with her husband.  She has worked front office and back office and is very energetic and friendly.  If anyone in the Silverdale and surrounding area is looking to hire, please contact Ms. Espinoza at 360-697-5726 or myself for more information. Hello Gayle, I live in Bergen County, NJ and am searching for a full time position in a podiatry office.  I have 19 years experience in the field.  For the past 12 years I held the position of Office Mgr in a two physician practice.  My expertise lies in billing and collection in addition to developing and running a smooth teamlike office staff.  I have had offers from other physicians, but if possible, would enjoy staying with podiatry.  I am proficient in Medisoft and Sammy as well as internet, Word, etc.  Thank you for your time.

Crystal-Clear Coding Q & A
by Rick Horsman, DPM, and Scott Schroeder, DPM

The Question (Edited for relevance):

I have a question from my practice manager.  It is concerning benign lesions such as verrucae.  If it is excised but no sutures are used, do you use the 17000 codes or is there another code that can be used?  Thanks, Gayle.

Sue Dissinger

The Question (Follow-up):

I should have added - can you use an excision code like 11420?

Sue Dissinger

The Answer:

Excision with suturing involves CPT 1142X series.

Excising without suturing is shaving, billed via CPT 11305 series.

"Excision" via destruction (cautery, lazer, etc) is the 17000 series

"An extra yawn one morning in the springtime, an extra snooze one night in the autumn is all that we ask in return for dazzling gifts.  We borrow an hour one night in April; we pay it back with golden interest five months later."  -  Winston Churchill

Just a reminder that tomorrow night - or Sunday morning - we need to set our clocks ahead ("Spring forward") for Daylight Saving Time.  I have to say that I agree with Benjamin Franklin's theory that if the sun is going to wake you up early anyway, you might as well adjust the clocks and work with it.  Franklin first proposed the idea in his 1784 essay, "An Economical Project for Diminishing the Cost of Light", while he was the American delegate in Paris.  Being of a very frugal nature, he focused on how many tons of candles people could save by doing more during daylight.  He even suggested that church bells "and, if necessary, cannon" be used to wake up the citizens and get them going about their business.   As for me, the alarm clock works!

With your "extra" time, feel free to write.  If not an essay, a simpler question, answer or comment will be fine!
